These Dirty Household Items Are In Desperate Need Of Attention

Spring has arrived, which means many people will be focusing on cleaning their homes. But while you might think that an extra box or two in the basement or bedroom isn’t a big deal, think again.

Clutter can be a hazard, especially to your mental health and general well-being. Research from St. Lawrence University found that a cluttered bedroom and a poor night’s sleep go hand in hand.

The study also found that a dirty home will negatively impact your energy and productivity.

Researchers say cleansing helps you gain a sense of control over your surroundings and can improve your mood.

If you plan to declutter this spring, consider taking the following steps:

  1. Go piece by piece and focus on one category;

  2. Set reasonable goals so you don’t give up halfway through;

  3. Create stacks to keep, give away, and toss; and

  4. If you find you’re storing something for someone else, give them time to retrieve it and get it out.

What about those hard-to-clean items you avoid? There are everyday products that we use that are essential to clean regularly.

For example, your pillow may contain oil, dirt, sweat, bacteria, saliva, and even mold. Put these pillows in the washing machine on the gentle cycle, using a small amount of detergent. Add tennis balls to the dryer to prevent pillow stuffing from clumping together.

Coffee machines are another very overlooked item. An NSF International study of kitchen products found that 50% of reservoirs sampled in coffee makers contained mold or yeast.

Also in your kitchen: These sponges need to be replaced. According to the study, more than 75% of dish sponges and rags contained salmonella, E. coli and feces.

If you have an ice maker, now is the perfect time to give it a deep clean. Start by unplugging the refrigerator and emptying the ice. Then clean it with warm soapy water, replace the filter and run a few ice cycles before use.

And don’t forget your home office and living room. In several households, the NSF study found yeast and mold, and even staphylococci, on the computer keyboard, remote control, and video game controller.
