The Tasmanian Liberal Government is focused on providing the benefit for all Tasmanians and we understand that cost of living pressures are currently affecting Tasmanian families.

That’s why today we’re announcing the expansion of the interest-free loan program from $1,500 to $2,000 as part of our targeted support for our vital community service sector. Applicants who experience domestic violence situations will be eligible for a loan of up to $3,000.

The NILS scheme provides an interest-free loan option for low-income Tasmanians to purchase essential household supplies and services, preventing families from potentially being trapped in a cycle of predatory payday loans.

In 2021 alone, the scheme enabled Tasmanian families to purchase 492 fridges, 352 heat pumps, 391 washing machines and repair 600 cars.

Our investment in the NILS program of over $4.5 million over four years (from 2021) is increasing the ability of Tasmanians to access safe, fair and affordable credit, when they need it most.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is strengthening the future of Tasmanians across the state and we will continue to put in place targeted supports, where needed, for those who need it most.
