Household chores that pregnant women should not participate in

Women generally gain weight during pregnancy. This requires a rebalancing of their body as the weight is mainly concentrated on their abdominal region. This makes it difficult for them to move around and do other activities. To avoid the stress of pregnancy, you need to balance work and rest.

Certain household chores can put undue stress on the body and potentially harm the unborn child. These chores should be avoided because stress hormones in pregnant women increase when performing repetitive tasks.

According to research by Kathleen Doheny on WebMD, here are some household chores to avoid during pregnancy.

1. Cleaning the litter box

One of the household chores to avoid is cleaning the litter box, because when you clean the litter box, you risk getting infections that harm your pregnancy.

However, if you don’t have someone to help you clean the litter box, be sure to wear gloves, a nose and mouth mask, and a coat to protect your clothes from contamination by germs.

2. Use of harsh chemicals

To avoid pregnancy-related complications, do not use insecticides and other cleaning products. For example, piperonyl butoxide, a chemical used for insecticides, can harm fetal brain development during pregnancy.

It is advisable to look for natural products that are free from toxic and harsh chemicals.

3. Tasks involving climbing

Some chores require climbing. This should be avoided by pregnant women as stepping on a ladder or stool while carrying the weight of another living being within you can throw you off balance. It could also harm the baby, leading to premature separation of the placenta.

When performing such tasks, you should ask for help for your health and that of your baby.

4. Tasks requiring bending

Some of the tasks that require bending include laundry, mopping, and mopping the floor.

Pregnant women should avoid chores that will require them to bend over, as weight gain during pregnancy can cause the body’s center of gravity to shift marginally, making bending during pregnancy dangerous for the sciatic nerve (which will from the lower back to the leg).

As soon as you feel uncomfortable while performing any of these tasks, you should stop immediately.

5. Standing for a long time

Pregnant women should avoid tasks that require standing for long periods of time.

Standing for a long time causes swelling and back pain due to the pressure on your feet.

Whenever you are involved in tasks that require standing for a long time, such as cooking, take frequent breaks and avoid standing for long periods of time.

6. Carry heavy objects

Any task that involves moving, lifting or carrying heavy objects should be avoided during pregnancy as it can increase the risk of fatigue and back injury.

It could also cause the hard tissues of the joints and pelvic floor to loosen as a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy. This could lead to an increased risk of injury.
