Governor DeSantis proposes permanent one-year tax exemptions on these household items – WFTV

BRADENTON, Fla. — From diapers and laundry detergent to children’s books and pet medications, Governor Ron DeSantis is offering permanent and one-year tax exemptions on a long list of household items.

DeSantis detailed his proposal at a press conference in Bradenton on Tuesday.

He said if his plan is approved by the state legislature, it will provide $1.1 billion in tax relief for Florida families.

The proposal includes the following elements:

Restoration of the two-week back-to-school tax holiday in the fall and the addition of an additional two-week spring holiday for children returning to school after the winter holidays. This also includes reinstating the two-week disaster preparedness tax holiday; a one-week tax holiday on tools and home improvements; a one-week tax holiday for Freedom Week; and a one-year tax holiday on Energy Star appliances.

A permanent tax exemption for basic necessities for babies and toddlers, including diapers, baby wipes, clothes and shoes for children under 5 years old.

A permanent tax exemption for cradles and pushchairs.

A permanent tax exemption on items containing medicinal ingredients and medical equipment to fill the gap on medical supplies and equipment that are not exempt from sales tax.

A one-year tax holiday for household items under $25 like laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap and trash bags.

A one-year tax exemption for children’s books for those under 17.

A one-year tax exemption for children’s toys for children aged 2 to 12.

A one-year tax exemption for children’s sports equipment such as children’s bicycles, footballs, soccer balls, rollerblades, baseballs, baseball bats, etc.

A one-year pet food tax holiday for pets and a permanent tax holiday for over-the-counter pet medications such as flea and tick medication.

Legislators must approve exemptions before they can take effect.
