Doing household chores is an effective way to stay active throughout the day. From mopping to mopping the floor, there are plenty of activities you can do to burn calories. Doing household chores can also keep you moving even when you’re home. But can you avoid exercising with household chores and get effective results? Nutritionist and fitness expert Munmun Ganeriwal took to Instagram to explain whether or not you should skip exercise when doing household chores. Keep reading to find the answer.

Chores Vs Exercise: Know Which Is Better

Ganeriwal explains, “It is good for you to do household chores because it helps you stay active throughout the day and will keep you fit. But you cannot replace exercise with household chores. Exercise is generally structured and follows certain scientific principles. Depending on the structure of your exercise, you will achieve results, whether it’s losing weight, getting toned up or getting rid of lifestyle diseases.”

Exercise and Progressive Overload

The nutritionist explains that one of the important principles of exercise is progressive overload, which means that you follow the same exercise routine for three to four weeks. After a while, you increase the sets, reps, or intensity of the exercise.

Simply put, this means that you gradually progress or overload to get stronger as the months or weeks pass. This progress is not possible when you stick to household chores. They can be a great activity for your schedule, but they can’t replace workouts.

What should you do?

“If not every day, you should exercise at least two or three times a week. You should also do daily tasks as they can act as an extra activity that will improve overall results,” adds Ganeriwal.
