Many pets are afraid of loud noises, but new research has shown that four in five dogs fear everyday household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, blenders, and hairdryers.
According to the comparethemarket.com study, nearly two in five dogs (38%) will leave the room until the device is turned off, while one in five (22%) will hide under a table or anguish sofa.
Dogs are often scared around certain objects due to the unpredictable noises they make, with study finding that these devices can make dogs tremble (21%), bark excessively (21%), chew (21%) and cry or moan (20%). During this time, one in 12 dogs (8%) panted in response to certain household appliances.

“As our research points out, one in five dogs behaves badly and can become destructive in response to a variety of common household appliances, which many dog parents will have experienced,” said Chris King, home insurance manager at comparethemarket .com.

“Ultimately, it is inevitable that your dog will be near these items on a daily basis, so owners should try to alleviate their concerns and avoid any potential accidents or damage that may arise due to their fear.”
Are you wondering how to help your dog if he is scared at home? According to veterinarian consultant Dr Heather Venkat, fear-related accidents are not uncommon but can be treated.
Here are some of the ways you can ease your puppy’s nerves:
1. By giving them space to get away from the noise. If your puppy leaves the room when you vacuum, let him do it.
2. Place your dog in a different room so that he is less likely to be afraid when using the noisy device.
3. Play soothing music to try and muffle the loud noise. You can also try giving them a stimulating toy to distract them from the device.
4. Associating noise with a treat also helps the puppy associate the noise with something positive.
